Jim Conley McCormick, 88, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and long- time resident of Wickett, Texas passed on to be with his Lord and Savior December 1, 2014 in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the age of 88 surrounded by his family. He was born in Quanah,Texas on January 28th, 1926. Jim was born to Charles and Mary Elizabeth McCormick, cotton farmers in West Texas. Jim was preceded by his four brothers and five sisters. He developed a very strong work ethic early on, helping the family pick cotton and tend to the garden from an early age. He loved to tell how surprised he was when somehow his family knew it was him who ate the tops off the onion plants. At age 17, he left the farm to join the US Navy serving as a sailor two years during World War II and two years during the Korean War, earning various military medals. Jim worked for Exxon for 40 years, retiring in 1986. Jim's integrity and work ethic were well-known among his coworkers and his leadership. Jim and Reba met in a Monahans drugstore where she worked in 1952. They feel in love and got married on January 30, 1953, celebrating 61 years together this year. They lived in Wickett at the same location for 60 years. Jim and Reba developed numerous rental properties in Texas and New Mexico. They welcomed many neighbors into their home over the years and quietly had a positive effect on those blessed to cross paths with them. Many have said that Jim was like a second father to them. Jim enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and walking. He was a very dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Reba Naoma McCormick, and three sons, Jim Jr. and Viola of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Shane and Debbie of Andrews, Texas; and Collin and Marisa of Fort Worth, TX.Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank caregivers, friends and family who provided such good support for them. Visitation will be Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 10 AM - 8 PM at Harkey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 5, 2014 at 10 AM at 3rd and Dwight Church of Christ with Billy Reed officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Monahans Memorial Cemetery. Jim C. McCormick, III, Jayce C. McCormick, Steven Ortiz, Brandon McCormick, Gary Hennington, Kendale Sargent, Daniel Roberts, and Jordan Higdon will serve as pallbearers. PDF Printable Version
