Jimmie N. "Jim" Kiourkas died in the Lord on August 3, 2008 surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Whitefish, Montana on May 23, 1919 to Nicholas and Pearl (Anderson) Kiourkas. In 1928, Jimmie's family moved to Greece and during his early life, he traveled between Greece and the United States several times on family business. In 1942, he enlisted in U.S. Army and served in the European Theater during World War II, remaining on active duty until 1945. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Jim and Dolly moved their young family from Bonners Ferry, Idaho to Spokane, Washington where Jim worked for Payless Drug Stores. In 1985, Jim and Dolly retired in Las Cruces. They have been active members of Peace Lutheran Church. Other interests included, camping, fishing, reading and being surrounded by his family. Jim was a devoted family man, a loyal and caring friend, a man of great faith, and an inspiration to his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth E. "Dolly" Kiourkas, daughters Sharie and John Behrens, Las Cruces and Rulaine Ethridge of Albuquerque. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren: Marci Behrens, Las Cruces; Kirk and Stephanie Behrens of Las Cruces; Eric Behrens, El Paso Texas; Karey and Chuck Mitchell of Albuquerque; and James and Alisa Ethridge of Albuquerque. Seven great grandchildren who grew to know and love their "Popoo" are also feeling his loss. Other surviving family members include sisters Elaine Flambouras, Anna Mittlestadt and brother Danny Kiourkas all of Spokane, Washington. Memorial Services to celebrate Jimmie's life will be held at 3:30 PM on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Peace Lutheran Church, 1701 E. Missouri. The family would like to sincerely thank Pastor Steve Loy and Pastor Jeanne Lutz for their love and care during Jim's extended illness, the entire staff at UNM Cancer Center for making "the best" out of a very difficult situation, and Amber Care nurses Jamie and Katurah for their exceptional care! In lieu of flowers, it was Jim's wish to have donations made to Peace Lutheran Church Remodeling Fund or to a charity of choice. PDF Printable Version
