Jo Leyva passed away October 14, 2106 surrounded by her family and closest friends. Jo was born and raised in Roswell with her parents Juan and Amalia Rodriguez along with several siblings. She left Roswell to live in Las Cruces after receiving a degree in Computer Science at Eastern New Mexico University only to continue her education at New Mexico State University where she received a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Jo was employed by the Department of Defense at the time of her death. Early in her career she used her position as an engineer to travel to elementary and middle schools in her community to talk and encourage young girls to pursue opportunities and careers in the STEM field. She ended up having the biggest influence on her youngest daughter who will also graduate from NMSU with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering this December. She worked hard to inspire, not only her daughters, but also other young girls to embrace their intelligence and inner strength. Although a successful and educated woman, Jo believed her biggest accomplishment was raising her two daughters. Jo was happiest when spending time with her girls. The three of them enjoyed doing everything together. Jo was a lover of all things important in life including spending time with her family and best friends, eating good chocolate, drinking the best coffee, and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. Her strength has inspired many but her infectious laugh will be missed the most. Jo Leyva is survived by her two daughters, Brianna and Kristen Leyva; Her older sisters, Fidelia Montanez and Paula Rodriguez; her older brothers Primitivo Rodriguez, Ricardo Rodriguez and Mercedes Rodriguez; and several nieces and nephews. Jo was preceded in death by her mother and father, Juan and Amalia Rodriguez; her sister Maria "Lupe" Rodriguez, and nephew Gilbert Rodriguez. Pallbearers will be Oscar Montanez, Victor Padilla, Lorenzo Alba, Brandon Roybal, Christopher Corral, and Michael Lara. Honorary pallbearers will be her brothers Primitivo Rodriguez, Ricardo Rodriguez, and Mercedes Rodriguez. A rosary will be held for Jo on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 7pm at Getz Funeral Home. Family is allowing visitation at 5pm. A mass will be held Friday October 21 at 10am at Immaculate Heart of Mary. A trip to Roswell, NM will be made immediately after the mass for a burial at South Park Cemetery. The family plans to hold a small reception after the rosary at the family home.
