It is with heavy hearts we announce that John William Garrett, Jr. peacefully left this earth on April 7, 2018. He was at home with his loving wife Debbie, a few of his close friends, and his beloved Brittany, Jessie. John was born December 2,1945 in El Campo, TX to Johnnie and Bernice Garrett. He grew up in Louise, TX, playing football at Louise High School, calf roping, working cattle and farming rice with his family. John graduated from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos with a Degree in Business and moved to Victoria, TX, beginning his banking career at Victoria Bank and Trust. In the summer of 1973, he moved to El Paso to work at El Paso National Bank, in the Marketing Department, then as a Correspondent Banker, and finally as the Senior Commercial Loan Officer. As time changed in the banking world, and Texas Commerce Bank purchased El Paso National Corporation, John relocated to Las Cruces to work at Western Bank. He was groomed for the position of President, working there from 1982-1988. In 1993, he and Debbie opened their own mortgage brokerage in Las Cruces, working there until his retirement in 2009. He fell in love with the desert southwest but remained fiercely proud of his Texas Heritage; often reminding his wife and friends that even though he was living in New Mexico, he was still a Texan. John loved traditional country music and dancing a two-step at every opportunity. He loved the cowboy life and was a member of the El Paso County Sherriff's Posse for many years. He also loved 50's music and was known to join some of his friends at the mike to sing along with their favorite songs. Golf was a passion and he played weekly for years. Many of his lifelong friends he first met playing golf. He even persuaded his wife to play with him. John was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Bernice Garrett, father-in-law Howard T. Brown, sister-in-law Lisa Brown Henry, and brother-in-law William (Bill) Brown. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Debbie. His daughter, Lisa Garrett Goodrich (John) and granddaughter Katherine Grace. Brother Jim Garrett (Debbie) and their sons, Patrick, Bo, and John. Brother Jeff Garrett (Kappy), his children Werth and Sara. His mother-in-law, Aldea Brown, Brothers-in-law Mike Brown, Chris Brown (Lois), Nieces Amber Davis (Jinglebob), Kerrin Gonzales (Isaak), John Henry III. and many cherished great-nieces and nephews.
