Las Cruces - It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend. Ildefonso ("Don Poncho") Garibay. Don Poncho was born on March 14, 1932 in La Bellota, Durango, Mexico. He came to this beautiful country under the United States Bracero program and worked as a farm laborer. In the 80's he settled with his family in Las Cruces, NM. He continued to work in the farm fields of the Mesilla Valley until he retired. He enjoyed telling jokes and listening as well as playing music. He played the guitar and would sing at family gatherings. He was adventurous and loved to share stories about his experiences as a bracero. How he went as far north as Michigan, and as west as California. He was a storyteller and enjoyed talking about pranks he played on cousins, friends and siblings growing up. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, hard work ethic, storytelling, music, jokes, and his positive attitude. He is survived by his children; Mario Garibay (Maria Guadalupe), Carlos Garibay (Isela), Alfonso Garibay (Lilia), Beatriz Favela (Joaquin), Arturo Garibay (Brigitte), and Erika Garibay. His brother Antonio Garibay and sisters, Emma Reyes, and Anna Gall. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Don Poncho was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved and beautiful wife, Martha Garibay on December 3, 2009; his son Juan Manual Garibay, daughter Antonia Garibay; brothers Octavio, Rogelio, Candelario, and Leopoldo and sister Leonides. Services will be Held by Getz at Our Lady of Health Catholic church on Friday, September 24, 2021. Viewing will begin at 10:00 am. Funeral mass at 11:00 am and burial at 12:00 pm. He will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife in the family plot at Masonic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be grandchildren Alfonso Garibay, Jesus Joaquin Favela Jr., Cesar Garibay, Andrew Garibay, Johnny Garcia III, Carlos Garibay, Alexis Garibay, and Evert Garibay.
