Josie Sara Matsuba DiMatteo, 76, peacefully passed away at her home in the presence of her loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, August 25, 2022.

Josie Sara Matsuba DiMatteo, 76, peacefully passed away at her home in the presence of her loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, August 25, 2022.

Josie was born on January 14, 1946 in Old Picacho Village to Joe A. and Luisa Chavez Lucero Matsuba. She met the love of her life, Joe R. DiMatteo, at Las Cruces High School during his senior year in 1962. They quickly became high school sweethearts and soon were married on November 7, 1963 at San Albino Catholic Church in Mesilla, NM. Josie devoted much of her life to the Catholic faith and community with one of her greatest accomplishments being the restoration of the Old Picacho cemetery, El Campo Santo de la Sagrada Familia.

Josie is survived by her husband Joe R. DiMatteo and her children Robert D. DiMatteo of Las Cruces, NM, Margo D. DiMatteo (Diana) of El Paso, TX, Rueben A. DiMatteo of Las Cruces, NM, and Melinda M. Montoya (Frank) of Albuquerque, NM. Grandchildren Frankie A. Montoya (Natalie) of Las Cruces, NM, Marie A. Montoya of Albuquerque, NM, and Matthew E. DiMatteo of Las Cruces, NM, and a sister Belen Avilucea of Silver City, NM. Her nieces Shirley L. O'Donnell (Charles) of Las Cruces, NM, Frances M. Jay of Las Cruces, NM, and Bonnie Avilucea of Silver City, NM, and Sonia B. Matsuba of Las Cruces, NM. A nephew Larry H. Jay (Anne) of Las Cruces, NM, and Joseph A. Matsuba also survive her. Also surviving her is a brother-in-law Michael A. DiMatteo and a sister-in-law Alma Morales.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Joe A. and Luisa Chavez Lucero Matsuba, brother Fabian N. Matsuba, and three sisters Erlinda, Maria Matsuba, and Corine M. Jay.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, August 29, 2022 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary where a prayer vigil will follow at 7:00 PM. Her funeral mass will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 also at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary with Fr. Peter Damian, Mgr. John Anderson, and Deacon Edward Fierro officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert, Rueben, Matthew, and Michael DiMatteo, Larry Jay, and Frank Montoya. Honorary pallbearers will be Frankie A. Montoya, Mark S. Trujillo, and Jim Goodrich.
