Joseph A. Fanelli , 66, of Las Cruses, NM died October 5,2006. Raised in Arlington, Virginia, "Pepe" as he was called by family and friends, graduated from the University of New Mexico with a major in history returning too Virginia to get his teaching degree in mathematics. He taught at Sanburg Middle School and Hayfield Middle School in Fairfax County. His love and care for his students were evidenced by their adoration for him and their successes in his classes. While teaching, Pepe met the love of his life, his soon to be wife, Anne Garrett. Pepe and Anne remained in the Virginia area until retirement, raising the apple of Pepe's eye, his daughter Holly. Pepe loved outdoor activities spending hours hiking in the Virginia countryside and later the Las Cruses hills. He loved playing golf and worked hard to improve his game. A gregarious and talented host, Pepe enjoyed entertaining family and friends in his home. He was a gifted storyteller regaling guests with beautifully crafted tales, which left his audience in tears or laughter and sometimes both. Pepe is survived by his wife Anne Fanelli; his daughter Holly Fanelli of Fairfax, Virginia; two sisters Diane Gledhill and husband Arthur of Taos NM and Mary Magnuson and her husband Chase of Albuquerque, NM. A Memorial Service will be held at the Getz Funeral Home, 1410 East Bowman Avenue in Las Cruses on Monday, October 9th at 10:00 AM.
