Joseph Donald Loomer, U.S. Army retired, 89, died at his home in Las Cruces on November 10, 2006. Mr. Loomer was born on May 4, 1917 to Harry and Nellie Loomer in Creighton, Nebraska, and was raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Joseph Donald Loomer, U.S. Army retired, 89, died at his home in Las Cruces on November 10, 2006. Mr. Loomer was born on May 4, 1917 to Harry and Nellie Loomer in Creighton, Nebraska, and was raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa. After six years with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, Mr. Loomer was called into active duty in 1942. His twenty-six year career included assignments in the European theater of operations in World War II; Korea during the Korean conflict; Morocco, Northern Africa; Vietnam; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Fort Sheridan, Illinois. After his retirement from the Army in 1969, Mr. Loomer began a 16-year career in Civil Service at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, continuing at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, and concluding in 1987 after a seven-year assignment at the White Sands Missile Range.He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and a lover of animals. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelda, who passed away in 1998. He is survived by his sister Virginia and husband Lou of Independence, Missouri; son Joe and wife Nancy of Monument, Colorado; son Doug and wife Pam of Torreon, Mexico; and four grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Las Cruces Humane Society. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, at Getz Funeral Home in Las Cruces. Graveside services with military honors will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, November 20, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. PDF Printable Version
