It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, Josephine (Josie) Balizan. She is now at home with our Heavenly Father. Josie passed away on August 4, 2014 at the University of Arizona Medical Center, Tucson, AZ. She was 86. Josie was born on September 23, 1927 in Mesa, AZ to Francisco and Eloisa Alvidrez. Josie came to live in Las Cruces, NM in 1949. During her time here, she saw Las Cruces grow and change. Josie was a businesswoman, artist, lifelong learner, collector, gifted seamstress, excellent cook, volunteer and member of numerous organizations. Above all, she was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her family meant the world to her and they will miss her deeply. She believed strongly in education and, as a single mother, through love and encouragement all five of her children graduated from New Mexico State University. Education was so important to Josie that she continued her own education and in 2010 she was honored as Dona Ana Community College Student of the Year. Through her experiences Josie had many stories and she loved sharing them with family members. She had a big heart and always helped those in need, whether family or acquaintances. We celebrate her life, accomplishments and everything she gave us, mostly of herself. She is survived by her sons: Patrick (Euna) Balizan, Ernest (Esperanza) Balizan and Arthur Balizan; her daughters: Linda Barrios Dupras (Chris) and Virginia Balizan Smith; Ten grandchildren: Catherine Dupras, Amanda Benividez, Brian Dupras, James Balizan, Daniel (Miranda) Balizan, Arthur C.(Kathleen) Balizan, Sarah Balizan, Mette Balizan, Rebecca (Nathan) Hooven and Helga (Joel) Wright; Three great-grandchildren: Leilani Alexa Harris, Lillian Balizan and Emma Balizan and Two sisters: Guadalupe Ramirez and Maria Bencomo. She was preceded in death by her parents: Francisco and Eloisa Alvidrez; three brothers: Francisco Alvidrez, Tereso Alvidrez and Alejandro Alvidrez, her sisters: Ofelia Rosas and Victoria Escobar and her husband: Valentin Balizan Sr. Visitation will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 12 with Bible Reflections from 7 to 8 pm at Getz Funeral Home. Celebration of life services will be held on Wednesday, August 13, at Getz Funeral Home at 10 am. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
