On the early morning of Saturday June 7th, 2014 John M. Barela passed away at 72 years of age peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones; following a short battle with cancer. John was born November 29th 1941 in Las Cruces, NM to the late Mike Barela and Christina Montoya. He graduated from Las Cruces High School. John married his high school sweetheart Clorinda Barela on September 22nd 1962. At a young age John began working for Bekins Moving Company. Eventually starting his career with Montgomery wards from which he retired. Due to his commitment and enjoyment of hard work he had the opportunity to continue working at Allied moving company by Jerry Green and alongside office Manager Christy Thomas where he was a valued employee. He was respected and admired by all his customers and colleagues. John was a loving family man and friend to all. He loved to spend his days working outside, polishing his prized Dodge Ram and finding any reason to have loved ones over for special occasions such as 49ers games, boxing matches or just to grill his signature rib eye and salsa. John is survived by his wife of 51 years Clorinda Barela; Brother Mike Barela (Maria) of El Paso TX; Children Michael Barela (Dawna) of Santa Fe, NM; Johnny Barela JR (Lupita) of Las Cruces, NM; Victor Barela (Lisa) of Santa Fe, NM; Juliet Barela of Las Cruces, NM; Vincent Barela (Lou) of Las Cruces, NM; and Ashley Barela (Ryan) of Las Cruces, NM. Also survived by twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, "compa's" and close family friends. Preceded in death by sisters Rosie Barraza, Virginia Garrett and Dolores "Lolita" Alderete. A prayer vigil will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 2:00 PM followed by a memorial service at Getz Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Navarro officiating. PDF Printable Version
