Kathleen A. "Kay" Mitchell went home to her Lord during her sleep on Tuesday September 8, 2015, at her Good Samaritan Village residence in Las Cruces. She was 91 years old. Kay was born in Magdalena, New Mexico on March 26, 1924, but spent most of her childhood in Deming, NM. She graduated from Deming High School, received a BA from UNM in 1944, and an MA from NMSU in 1979. She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma for over 70 years and was a member of the local Chapter. In 1944 she married the love of her life, George A. Mitchell, a naval officer. She supported her husband's career for 30 years and raised two daughters. She was active in Naval Officers' Wives groups and frequently did Red Cross volunteer work at various local and military hospitals. Kay was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and for many years was a member of the Altar Guild. She was a former Mesilla Valley Hospice board member and a longtime supporter of the Hospice. Kay was instrumental in helping Hospice grow and was a volunteer there for over 15 years. Her family would like to thank her caregivers, Serena Keith and Maria Clark for the loving care they provided in Kay's last years. We would also thank Good Samaritan Village and its staff for a living experience that Kay truly enjoyed for over twelve years. She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Phillipson, married to Robert Phillipson, of Las Cruces; and Jean McNair, married to Dr. Charles McNair, of Watertown, CT. She had 6 grandchildren, Kathryn, Robert and Jean Phillipson, and Anne, Emily and Andrew McNair; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was also close to her nephew John Terry and his wife Penny of Oak Hill, CA. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Philip and Nellie Argall; her sisters Frances Terry and Marion McGregor; and her husband George A. Mitchell, Captain, USN retired. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 3:00 PM at St. James Episcopal Church, 102 St. James, Mesilla Park, NM
