Louie Horacio Martinez, 82, of Las Cruces, died Sunday, April 28, 2013 with sister Mary A. Garza and his son Michael at his bedside. Lou was born on his grandparent's ranch in Pintada, NM, May 2, 1930. He is the son of Gilberto G. Martinez and Agneda Delgado. Lou left New Mexico as a young man to join the Navy at the end of WW II and served during the Korean War and on the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 22 years of faithful service. While in the service of our country he was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Commendation for Achievement, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal, Sixth Good Conduct Award and the National Defense Service Medal. He taught data processing at North Seattle Community College and then went on to be registrar also at Seattle Central Community College. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a sportsman and won numerous trophies for bowling, tennis, golf as well as commendation for expert marksmanship. He is survived by his loving wife Lorraine of Las Cruces, daughter Dawn of Portland, OR, son Michael of Santa Fe, NM. sister Mary A. Garza of Las Cruces, brother Carlos Martinez of Albuquerque, NM, grandson Cruz and by numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving him are his step-children Joan Swedberg, Jim Pielemeier, Jon Pielemeir, Jenni Brotnov, and Jerry and Jeff Pielemeir and their spouses and many grandchildren. Lou was preceded in death by his brothers Gilbert, Robert and by his dearest sister Emily. At his request cremation has taken place and a memorial mass to celebrate his life will be held at 10 am on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at St. Albert the Great Newman Center. Lou's remains will be laid to rest at Santa Fe National Cemetery with military honors at a later date. PDF Printable Version
