Louisa Eres Almanzar, age 82, passed away on February 19, 2008 surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her home. Louisa was blessed with a long life, a loving husband and family, and an innate sense of compassion for those in need. She was fondly known to family and friends as "La Guera". She welcomed into her home all who needed conversation, a warm cup of coffee or a red enchilada. She was a passionate reader and shared this love with all her children and grandchildren. She operated her home with the efficiency of a drill sergeant, and together with her husband, Ramon, instilled in her children and grandchildren the importance of humility, kindness without reservation, and a strong work ethic. Louisa was born in Las Cruces on January 9, 1926 to Eufemia Eres. She was a rare commodity in that she was native to the old neighborhoods of Las Cruces and spent many happy years on May Street. She was a cashier for many years at the old Safeway on Las Cruces Avenue, and later retired from Furr's Supermarket, where she was often referred to as the fastest cashier this side of the Rio Grande. Besides her hard work in the grocery industry, Louisa was a devout member of St. Genevieve's Catholic Church and routinely gave generously of her time to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, often serving coffee after mass. She is survived by her children, Vicky Garcia (Ernie), Steve Almanzar (Joleen), Ralph Almanzar (Claudia), Della Mancha (Joe), Jo Anna Singer (Judd), and Valarie Vasquez (Oscar). Her grandchildren include Daniel Garcia, Amy Schwebke (Andrew), Amanda Madrid (Fernando), Lana Gasper, Susan and Lisa Mancha, Amber and Antonio Marta, Renee Vasquez, Allie Almanzar, Madison Singer, Diego Almanzar, and great-grandchildren Fernando Madrid, Jr., Leilani Alvarado, Charolette Marta, Amaya McFarland, her devoted cousin and caretaker, Betty Ontiveros, and numerous extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon, her brother, Leonardo Eres, her sister, Avelicia Hill, and her precious grandson, Jesse Almanzar. A visitation will be today Thursday, February 21, from 6:00 to 7:00p.m. at St. Genevieve's Catholic Church where a prayer vigil is scheduled to follow at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 22 at 1:00 p.m., also at St. Genevieve's with Fr. Sean Garrity officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ernest Garcia, Jose Mancha, Judd Singer, Oscar Vasquez, Daniel Garcia, Andrew Schwebke, and Fernando Madrid. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters and her grandsons Antonio Marta and Diego Almanzar. PDF Printable Version
