Miquela A. Smith, known to all as Mickey, heard the angels call and went peacefully to be with God in Heaven on Monday May 9, 2005 after a short and sudden battle with cancer. Mickey was born September 29, 1932 in Santa Fe, NM to Abundio and Maria Armijo and was the youngest member of a large family including three brothers and six sisters. Mickey was a devout member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Holy Cross Ladies Guild and eagerly volunteered herself to assist with the many functions of her church. She was also an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary at VFW Post 10124, and the Does Drove 44 of the Elks Lodge 1119 both in Las Cruces. During her working years prior to retirement Mickey enjoyed a variety of positions both in and out of government service at various locations around the country, which gave her a well rounded view of life and relationship with people at all levels. She was a lady full of love and kindness who brought the sunshine and joy of a loving heart and buoyant personality to all who knew her. Her family was the center focus of her life and the void that she leaves must now be filled with the memories of her love and caring and selflessness, which she showered on them always. She is survived by her husband of 53 years Lendal R. Smith Jr., son, Lendal R. "Skipper" Smith III and companion Tamara of Ozona, Texas; Paul M. Smith and wife Sandra of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Three much beloved grandchildren Erica, Emily and husband Brian and Wilton. Also three wonderful great grandchildren Raymond, Lily, and Daisy. One brother, Abundio Armijo Jr. and wife Laurentia; three sisters, Margaret Armijo, Maida Martinez and husband Benny, and Maria Barton Martinez all of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Many nieces, nephew, cousins and their families also survive her. Besides her parents Abundio and Maria Armijo, Mickey was also preceded in death by a son Kenneth R. Smith; two brothers and three sisters. Mickey requests everyone to greet her sudden departure from this life not with tears and sorrow but rather with prayers and masses devoted to the peaceful repose of her soul. Local services will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda, where Fr. Martin Cordero will conduct a Rosary at 6 pm on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 assisted by members of the Ladies Guild. Msgr. John Anderson will celebrate a Memorial Mass at 10 am on Thursday, May 19, 2005. After the mass, a reception will be hosted by the Ladies Guild at the church. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary will host a second reception at 2:30 PM on Thursday, May 19, 2005 at VFW Post 10124, 709 S. Valley Drive. All are welcome to join the family at the church services and receptions which celebrate the life of a very wonderful lady. Following a final mass to be celebrated at 11 am Tuesday, May 31, 2005 in Santa Fe, NM at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, her cremains will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, where her husband will join her at a time of God's choosing PDF Printable Version
