Margaret Davila

June 10, 1941 — January 30, 2012

With her family at her side, Margaret "Mimi" Davila passed away into the presence of her Savior on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at her home in Las Cruces, NM. Mimi was born in Corpus Christi, TX and resided there the majority of her life. Upon graduating Mary Carroll High School, she married her loving husband Carlos. Mimi was an extremely creative individual who spent 20 years as a beautician. Deciding she wanted to teach others about the profession she was so passionate about, Mimi went back to college and completed both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Education. She then spent 17 years teaching vocational cosmetology at Robstown High School. Her students excelled under her guidance and won numerous state level competitions. Being a teacher afforded her the luxury of summer vacation and she used the time to travel. She enjoyed summers in Europe during the time her daughter and son-in-law were stationed overseas. She also used her son's move to Australia, to visit and explore the Land Down Under. New scenery and new foods were always exciting to her as was the chance to chat with folks. Mimi had a wonderful sense of humor and used her eternal optimism to face many of life's trials. 14 years ago she was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. Determined to do all she could to help win her fight and convince the doctor she would be a cooperative patient, Mimi offered to "run around the block naked if that was needed." Suppressing a grin, her doctor politely informed her he didn't think it would be necessary. When the last few months necessitated her spending many hours at the doctor's office and infusion center accompanied by her husband and daughter, she never failed to tell others her "groupies' couldn't bear to be without her. Mimi is survived by her husband of 51 years Carlos; son Daniel (Daria) Davila of Perth, Australia; daughter Rebecca (Michael) Poland of Las Cruces, NM; brother Phillip (Carol) Cuellar of La Plata, Maryland, grandsons Daniel and Zachary, granddaughters Rachel and Remy as well as her great-grandson Ethan. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. A celebration of her life will be at 2 PM on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at Getz Funeral Home. Mimi's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the many nurses at MMC Infusion center and MMC Home Health who were always considerate of Mimi's extreme needle phobia and went the extra mile to make her comfortable. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice or to a charity of choice. PDF Printable Version
