Margaret S. Ryan - On Friday, August 21, 2009, Margaret Ryan died at Mountain View Regional Medical Center. Margaret is survived by her husband of 46 years, John P. Ryan, and her sons, John P. Ryan II and wife Ellen, Charles T. Ryan and wife Tammy, and David M. Ryan and wife Shalmarie, twelve grandchildren and one great- grandchild. Margaret was born on March 19, 1937, to Mary and Maurice B. Sullivan. She attended catholic schools in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Mount Saint Agnes College in Baltimore with a BA in Education. Teaching children was Margaret's true passion, which was obvious to all that knew her. She enjoyed making ceramics, every Christmas she would take ceramics to school so the kids in her class could paint them as gifts for their families. Margaret's love for children also carried over into her dedication to the High Noon soccer program for many years. She began teaching in the Baltimore Public School System where she taught for ten years before moving to Las Cruces, New Mexico. She began her teaching in Las Cruces at Lucero Elementary School in 1971. When that school closed, she moved first to Conlee Elementary School and then to Booker T. Washington Elementary School where she continued to teach until May of 2000. Upon retirement, she continued to work at Washington Elementary School where she directed the Safe After School program, which she had initiated. After suffering the loss of her right leg as the result of a fall, she continued to work with children by volunteering at Dona Ana Elementary School until 2007, when her health forced her to retire completely from working in the school system. A visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Tuesday August 25, 2009 at Getz Funeral Home. A prayer vigil will be held at 10AM Thursday August 27, 2009 at Our Lady of Purification Catholic Church with Funeral Mass to immediately follow with Fr. Miguel Macaya officiating. Inurnment will be at Dona Ana Cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Margaret's name to the Las Cruces Public School Foundation program. PDF Printable Version
