Mary Alice Martin, 82, passed from this life at home surrounded by family and friends on October 20, 2010 after a brief illness. She is survived by a son, Jack Craig Martin of Albuquerque, NM and a daughter, Sherrie Herman and husband Glenn of Las Cruces, NM and by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; David Herman and wife Kristy and their children Makenzy and Macy, and Julie DeLaO and husband Anthony and their children Kaylee and Cameron. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Cearley of Temple, Texas; nephew Terry Cearley, niece Vicky Bierschank and a cousin, Donna Wilkins whom she regarded as a sister. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack H. Martin, her mother Dottie Williams, her brother Dale Cearley, her grand-daughter Amy Lynn Herman, and two-great-grandsons, Tristen Jody Herman and Taylor Glenn Herman. Mary was born on October 26, 1927 in Temple, Texas and grew up in the surrounding area. After graduation from high school she attended college at Agriculture and Mechanical College (Texas A&M), Bryan TX. She was married to Jack in 1948 and they lived in Temple TX, Corpus Christi TX, and Pensacola FL before the family finally moved to Las Cruces in 1964 when Jack went to work for the US Army at White Sands Missile Range. For the remainder of her life, Mary resided in Las Cruces where she made numerous life-long friends, both in the community and in her church family at the Las Cruces Church of Christ. She was a member of the Church of Christ for 70 years. Mary was one of those special people that made you a better person just for knowing her. She brightened your day with her ever-present smile; she encouraged you and lifted you up with every word she spoke; she loved and gave her friendship unconditionally; and her positive outlook on life shined on everyone she knew. She will truly be missed. The peace and comfort of Mary's final days would not have been possible without the at-home support of Mesilla Valley Hospice and the help of close family friends and relatives. You were a source of strength, comfort, compassion and help every time it was needed and Mary and her family appreciated it so much. At Mary's request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at 6:00 pm on Monday October 25, 2010 at Getz Funeral Home Chapel. Honorary pallbearers are Bryce Carrington, Joe Herman, Bobby Jack Hale, Roger Odom, Eddie Herrera, and Stephen Squires. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's name can be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice or to the Las Cruces Church of Christ Building fund. PDF Printable Version
