Mary Lou (Herblin) Kearns died peacefully on March 11, 2008. She was 87 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph V. Kearns and by her dear friend Howard Haddox. She is survived by Joe Hernandez, Mr. Haddox's life partner, who cared for her until the moment of her death. She is also survived by her family: Margaret and Liz Widmer and their husbands; Steve and Ruth Widmer and other members of the Widmer family; Irene and Mel Fiske and daughters Alice, Susan, Millie, Nancy and son Jimmy; and the rest of the Haddox family; the Hernandez Family of El Paso; nieces Kristin Beauchamp and Shannon Ward; her brother, William L. Herblin, wife Kathryn and her nephew Bill Herblin of Austin, Texas; and her daughter, Betsy Kearns Anderson and husband John Gardner of Santa Fe. Mrs. Kearns was a musician of rare ability. In the 1950's she was the organist at St. James Episcopal Church; from about 1958 until her retirement she was the organist at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where she was a member until her death. She worked for many decades for the Physical Science Laboratory at New Mexico State University. She had a smile that would light up your heart with happiness. On spring evenings she sometimes played Chopin's gentle Berceuse in C on the piano for own pleasure. May those lovely notes echo through the hearts of all who miss her and give them comfort. Following cremation, there will be a memorial service at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church at 11:00 am on Friday, March 14. She hoped that friends instead of floral tributes would contribute to her beloved Nature Conservancy or any charity benefiting animals or the environment. May she and all beings achieve liberation.
