Mercedes Gomez Torres Our community sadly lost a pillar of the community on Wednesday, August 30th, 2023. Mrs. Mercedes Gomez Torres lovingly known as Mercy / Meche passed away under hospice care at 11:12am from natural causes. Her commitment to her family, church, community, and students as a school Librarian and the many friends that surrounded her was always rooted in her faith in Jesus Christ. Mercy was born on September 24th, 1938, in Mexico City. She met the love of her life at the original Las Cruces High School and married for whom Roy V. Torres of 65 years survived her. They built a healthy, prosperous, and vibrant life full of challenging work, family, and deep faith. She is also survived by her son Javier Torres, daughter Carla Cashman with husband Thomas Cashman- grandchildren Tyler and Kira Cashman and son Jaime Torres with wife Phuong N Torres, along with her grandchildren Cassandra Ramirez, Jessica Aldouri and great grandchildren Zain, Zoey, Zyla and Zena. Mercy spent many years teaching children to read at Mesilla Elementary and East Picacho Elementary as an animated and enthusiastic Librarian. She would always greet "her" children at the door with a huge smile and hug while encouraging them to read and take books home. Mercy was a dedicated animal lover, she always accepted stray dogs and cats. She often would make donations to local shelters. Please donate and support your local shelters in Mercy's honor. From the very beginning Mercy would enjoy gathering her family to take trips to Juarez, Mexico to donate food, medicine, and clothing to the less fortunate. After retirement she continued God's work by joining church trips to Mexico spreading the word at Juarez and Chihuahua prisons and working with different charities. She continued gathering clothes and medicine up until her passing. Mercy was a dedicated parishioner of the Heart for the World Church. As a respected elder and woman of faith, people leaned on her and her words of encouragement, she was a remarkable listener with plenty of time to help. We thank all of our family, friends for their love and support of our wife, mother, and friend. Her celebration of life will be held at: Heart of the world church 1605 S Valley Dr, Las Cruces New Mexico 88005 on October the 14th at 2:00pm.
