It is with sadness and love that we announce the peaceful passing of our father and friend, Meredith (Rex) Hammers, on August 9. He was born in Clearwater, Kansas, on February 23, 1919, to Francis Marion and Myra Jane Hammers. While he was in Long Beach, CA, on army maneuvers, he met his love of 56 years, Jean. They were married on July 17, 1943. In 1941 Rex joined the Kansas National Guard which was part of Patton's 35th Division. He was in Europe at the start of the war, landed on Omaha Beach six days after D-Day, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was honorably discharged as a second lieutenant after the war ended. In 1946 he and Jean moved from Kansas and established the family farm in Redgranite, WI, which they had for 46 years. The family farm thrived under Rex and Jean's hard work, and the values they instilled in their six children while they worked together on the farm are their greatest legacy. They retired to Las Cruces 20 years ago where Rex enjoyed reading, political discussions, visits from his family, exercise, and the friends from his various morning coffee groups. Rex is preceded in death by his wife Jean, his parents, Myra and Francis, his brother Bill, his sisters Elsie Ewing and Sue Woolery, and a son, Glen, who died at birth. He is survived by his children, Jo Paulson and her husband Howard of Las Cruces, Sue Bradley and her husband Greg of Randolph, WI, Sandra Edenfield and her husband DeWitt of Milner, GA, Mike Hammers and his wife Teresa of Appleton, WI, Dave Hammers and his wife Bobbie of Onalaska, WI, and Pat Briski and her husband Gordon of Berlin, WI. One of his greatest sources of pride was seeing his 37 grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and mature. A small gathering of friends and relatives will be held at 7 pm, Friday evening, at the Getz Funeral Home. A formal memorial service will be held in Wisconsin and graveside services will be held in Clearwater at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Rex and Jean Hammers Scholarship Fund which has been established to benefit graduates of Clearwater High School who are pursuing further education in agriculture. Donations may be made to the Rex and Jean Hammers' Scholarship Fund, in care of First State Bank and Trust, PO Box 128, Clearwater, KS. 67026 PDF Printable Version
