Opal M. Getz, 82, of Las Cruces, died Thursday, November 3, 2005 with family by her side as she made her journey to our Heavenly Father. She was born October 10, 1923 to Roy and Jennie Smillie in Massillon, Ohio. She moved to Las Cruces with her family in 1957, and was employed by the Las Cruces Public Schools until she retired. She was an active member for many years with the Benevolent Patriotic Order of D.O.E.'S, and the Women's Auxiliary V.F.W. Post 10124. Opal had a passion for baking, and made many wedding and birthday cakes for people through out the valley. Her peanut brittle and hard candies were frequently requested and will be remembered by many. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that taught her family a love for one another and a greater love for God. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert "Bullet" A. Getz and two sons; Terry W. Getz and wife Lucille of Las Cruces, NM and Rob Getz of Albuquerque, NM. She is also survived by two sisters; June Watts of Massillon, OH and Dorothy Irons of Canton, OH eight grand children and four great grandchildren. Opal was preceded in death by one daughter Connie S. Lopez and one brother Roy Smillie. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Sunday, November 6, 2005 at Getz Funeral Home. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Getz will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 7, 2005 also at Getz Funeral Home Rev. Don Shockley and Rev. Jim Wood officiating. Burial to follow at Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren Steven W. Getz, Bryan Getz, Chad Getz, Amanda Lopez, Gabriel Lopez, Matthew Lopez, Jared Getz, and Sean Getz.
