Oscar (Ozzie) Gorbitz passed away at his home surrounded by family, on February 28, 2018. He was 89 years old. Ozzie was born in South Bend, Indiana, on April 19, 1928, to Anthony and Ella (Horvath) Gorbitz. He was the seventh child in a family of 9 children and the last surviving member of his generation. Ozzie is survived by his wife Charlotte Gorbitz of Las Cruces, his sons Michael and Ozzie-Hans, daughter in laws-Kristen and Janet and by 5 grandsons; Oscar Joseph, Michael David, Ozzie John, Mark Andrew and Anthony James Gorbitz. Ozzie was raised in South Bend, Indiana, with his 8 siblings and worked many jobs until he joined the Indiana Air National Guard and later the U.S. Air Force for a 29-year career. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1952 and served as a tail gunner in a B-29 bomber. He subsequently changed his career field to food service. His Air Force assignments took him to Labrador, Germany, France, California, New Mexico, Michigan, Belgium and Thailand. He retired from the military service as a USAF Master Sergeant in 1977. During a tour of duty at Trier Air Base, Germany, he met Charlotte Elisabeth Mehling. They married on December 7th, 1957. Some of Ozzie's assignments were long and lonely, so he used his hobbies of drawing and painting to pass the time. Ozzie was also an avid gardener and would transform anything he touched into a masterpiece, His passion for gardening was always present wherever the family lived. His love for cooking, not only for his family and friends, inspired him to open a restaurant in Las Cruces in 1979, called, Ozzie's Place. This allowed others to enjoy his delicious food. A Funeral Mass will be held at Mesilla Valley Hospice Chapel, 299 Montana Avenue, Las Cruces, NM on March 16th, 2018, at 2:00 pm with Father Chuck Henkle officiating the ceremony. A reception to follow at the family home. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ozzie's life. Condolences can be sent to (www.GetzCares.com). The family would like to thank Angel Wings Home Care, Veteran's Administration and Mesilla Valley Hospice, for their diligent care during Ozzie's long illness.
