Otis Dale Embree, 74, of Dona Ana, NM died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008. He was born Oct. 28, 1934 in Kit Carson, CO to Otis O. and Helen Vivian O'Neill Embree, a farming and ranching family. Due to the drought of the "Dust Bowl" and the Great Depression, the family was forced in 1936 to ship their livestock to Versailles, MO and settle in the Beaman/Sedalia area. Shortly afterward Dale's father was able to get a steady job with the Post Office Department in Kansas City, MO, In 1939, his sister Janie was born. They were great pals greatly enjoying the visits with their many friends, aunts, uncles and cousins in and around Kansas City and Beaman. Due to the father's failing health he was forced to leave the Post Office Department and the family moved to Cheyenne Wells, Co in 1943. Their mother, Vivian was able to get a job as a telephone operator with Mountain Bell. In 1947, still seeking a more favorable climate for the father's health, the family moved to Las Cruces, NM. Dale graduated from Las Cruces Union High School in 1952. That summer he was enrolled in the Co-op Student Trainee Program at White Sands Proving Ground and New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Dale married Betty Charlene Barker, a native Las Crucen, on Nov. 21, 1956. In 1958, he graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in Electronic Engineering and began regular employment at White Sands Missile Range. In 1962, Dale and Charlene's first son, David Bryan was born. He died shortly thereafter. In 1964, their second son, Christopher Lee, of Las Cruces was born. In 1965 the family moved to their farm just north of Dona Ana. In 1967, their third son, Timothy Allen of Fort Worth, was born. In 1978 due to budget cuts and personnel reductions Dale took an early retirement from WSMR and started working the farm full-time. In 1983 he got a job at the High Energy Laser Test Facility. Again because of personnel reductions he left that job and started working the farm full-time again in 1990. Dale always tried to provide for his family. He was always thankful for the many blessings of God had given him. His favorite Bible verse was John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Beside his immediate family Dale is survived by his sister, Janie, and her husband Charles V. Smith, their children, Susan and Michael and Susan's children Lindsay and Emily. Memorial Services to celebrate his life will be at 10 AM on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008 at Getz Funeral Home with Rev. Chip Moore officiating. PDF Printable Version
