Pauline Black

April 26, 1922 — April 30, 2016

Pauline "Polly" (Wright) Black, age 94, passed from this world into the arms of her loving savior, Jesus Christ, April 30, 2016, at Casa Bella Residential Care in Las Cruces, N.M. She is descended from early pioneer ranchers in Grant and Hidalgo counties. Polly was born April 26, 1922, in Lordsburg, N.M. to Lee J. and Delilah (Wilmeth) Wright. She graduated from Lordsburg High School in 1941 and married Arnold D. Black in 1944 in Lordsburg. On their honeymoon, they rode a train from Lordsburg, NM to Washington D.C. It was filled with soldiers who were being shipped out for WWII . Arnold was among the soldiers on their way to war. They were married for 63 years before Arnold's passing in 2007. Polly and Arnold lived for many years in Hatch, N.M. and were involved in the Methodist church there and the Church of God. One of Polly's favorite activities was getting together with her many friends in the senior citizen group to sing hymns. She continued this activity at the Good Samaritan Senior Center when she moved to Las Cruces in 2000. Polly was actively involved in the Hatch community, serving on numerous village committees and clubs. In 1971 she graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in Biology. She enjoyed being a substitute teacher in the Hatch Valley schools. She loved her students and enjoyed being able to watch them grow up. Polly was an avid gardener. While living in Lordsburg she operated her own nursery business for a number of years. In Hatch, she was known as "The Iris Lady." She bred hybrid tall-bearded iris and received many awards for them. Some of her irises were registered with the American Iris Society and they are enjoyed in many gardens across the United States. She had at least 1,000 registered iris in her Hatch garden. Besides gardening, Polly was a fan of many sports, especially baseball, and enjoyed playing bridge, cards, and dominoes with her family and friends. Polly was very proud of all her children and grandchildren and could be overheard telling her friends about their accomplishments and how special they were to her. Polly was preceded in death by her parents; her six sisters and one brother. She is survived by daughter Christia Causbie (Johnny) of Los Lunas, N.M.; son Don Black (Carol) of Los Lunas; son Doug Black of North Plains, Oregon; and daughter Priscilla Lockyear of Las Cruces. Her grandchildren are Chris Black; Klint Black; Dr. Wiley Black (Jami); Daniel Black; Erin Enders (Mark); Christopher Black (Leela); Elizabeth Lockyear and Sarah Lockyear. She is also survived by 10 great- grandchildren and 27 nieces and nephews. All services will be on Thursday, May 5th, 2016. There will be a viewing from 10 - 11 a.m. at Getz Funeral Home, 1410 E. Bowman, in Las Cruces followed by a grave-side service at Garden of Memories cemetery in Hatch at noon. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 421 N. Franklin Street, Hatch, NM at 2:30 p.m. Flowers may be sent to Getz Funereal Home. Arrangements by Getz Funereal Home.
