Pauline "Polly" (Wright) Black, age 94, passed from this world into the arms of her loving savior, Jesus Christ, April 30, 2016, at Casa Bella Residential Care in Las Cruces, N.M. She is descended from early pioneer ranchers in Grant and Hidalgo counties. Polly was born April 26, 1922, in Lordsburg, N.M. to Lee J. and Delilah (Wilmeth) Wright. She graduated from Lordsburg High School in 1941 and married Arnold D. Black in 1944 in Lordsburg. On their honeymoon, they rode a train from Lordsburg, NM to Washington D.C. While living in Lordsburg she operated her own nursery business for a number of years. In Hatch, she was known as "The Iris Lady." She bred hybrid tall-bearded iris and received many awards for them. Some of her irises were registered with the American Iris Society and they are enjoyed in many gardens across the United States. She had at least 1,000 registered iris in her Hatch garden. Besides gardening, Polly was a fan of many sports, especially baseball, and enjoyed playing bridge, cards, and dominoes with her family and friends.
