Pete V. Banegas, 88, of Dona Ana, NM died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010. He was born Aug. 16, 1921 in San Isidro, NM to Estevan and Margarita Banegas. Pete was a veteran of the US Army where he served his country honorably during WW II. While in the service he earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle-Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with 6 Bronze Stars. After the military he became a farmer working with his brother Estevan for about 10 years then went on to work at WSMR, retiring after 25 years of faithful service. Pete was a member of Our Lady of Purification and was instrumental in the building of the new church. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a jack-of-all-trades. He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends who knew and loved him. He is survived by his son Jeff Banegas and wife Debbie of Las Cruces and his daughter Elvia Banegas of Dona Ana; sister Ella Curry; his grandchildren Brian, Jordan and Jenna and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death is his loving wife Corina; brothers Estevan, Don and Manuel; sisters Velsa, Corina, Amelia, Inez and Angelita. A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 pm on Monday, Jan.25, 2010 at Our Lady of Purification Catholic Church where his prayer vigil will follow at 7 pm. Pete's funeral mass is at 10 am on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 also at Our Lady of Purification with Fr. Miguel Macaya officiating. Rite of Committal will be at the Dona Ana Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers are Pat, Primo, Gary and Jimmy Banegas, Randy Rodriguez, Raymond Barela and Moose Gomez. PDF Printable Version
