Ramon B. Valdez, 84, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on July 8, 2005, at his home in Las Cruces. "Monchi" or "Apa", as he was known to his friends and family, was born on March 11, 1921, in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Don Jose Valdez and Dona Emeteria Berumen de Valdez. He was a deacon at Iglesia Bautista Buenas Nuevas. He served as Chairman of the Pro-Building Fund and volunteered his time as a general maintenance man for the church property and vehicles. Ramon - a self-taught mechanic, welder, and carpenter, had a lifelong passion for challenging repair jobs. He retired from Brown & Root, Corp. in 1986, but continued to work in his auto shop for the next 19 years until he accidentally fell while repairing a motor. He loved to take a car apart and put it back together. He read extensively and kept up on world affairs. His favorite book was The Holy Bible, which he read faithfully on a daily basis. He leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion. He will be remembered as a man of high moral character and a great sense of humor. He was dedicated to his family, dependable, true to his word, strong - yet gentle. Survivors include the love of his life, Connie Valdez, of El Paso, TX, four sons: Albert of Hurley, NM, Raymond of Mesilla Park, NM, Danny of Las Cruces, NM, and Mark of Santa Fe, NM; six daughters: Martha Diaz of Fort Worth, TX, Teresa Campos of San Antonio, TX, Connie Reza of Houston, TX, Blanca Quesada of Albuquerque, NM, Mirna Valdez of Las Cruces, Laura Valdez of El Paso, TX; twenty-nine grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren.
