Ricardo M. Carrillo, 89, lifelong resident of the Mesilla Valley, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 15, 2008. He was born Dec. 12, 1918 in Las Cruces to Felix and Carlota Marquez Carrillo. Ricardo was a veteran of the US Army where he served his country honorably with the 120th Combat Engineers and the 168th Infantry Red Bull Division during WW II. He was a decorated war hero earning the Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Medal, European-African- Middle Eastern (3 bronze stars), Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star Medal (oak leaf cluster). Ricardo was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary, life member of VFW Post #3242, life and oldest member of the Lulac's and Past President and member of the Brick Layer's Local Union #1. He was best known in the Las Cruces area as "Maestro" bricklayer. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his children Gilbert Carrillo and wife Gloria, Norma Davila and husband Jimmy and Geri Lujan and husband Frank all of Las Cruces; sister Lupe DeLaO of Dona Ana, NM; grandchildren Tessie, Gabe, Naomi, Rick, Danny, Kris, Frank Jr., Javier, Victoria, Brenda, Carlos, Dulce, Gibby and his best friend Rosie Chavez. Also surviving him are 33 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ricardo was preceded in death by his loving wife Victoria Maese; brothers George, Luis, Ramon, Carlos, Emilio and Bernadino and by sisters Delfina, Maria and Juanita. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Getz Funeral Home where a prayer vigil will follow at 7 PM. A funeral mass to celebrate Ricardo's life will be at 10 AM on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. Rite of Committal will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers are Gabe Davila, Rick, Danny and Kris Gamboa, Carlos and Tom Carrillo.
