Richard Markham, 81, of Las Cruces, NM went to meet his Lord and Savior on Wednesday November 2, 2005. He was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Chelsea, Maine, to Ray and Ina (Adams) Markham. After graduating from the eighth grade, he went to work in the woods to help his father. In 1942, he answered his country's call and joined the U.S. Army, where he served for two and a half years. He saw action in the European Theater and was in the third wave that landed at Normandy Beach on D-Day. After the army he was a part of the Maine National Guard and was honorably discharged in May 1957. Richard retired from Togas Veteran's Hospital in Togas, Maine, after 33 years. In 1980, he and his family moved to Las Cruces, N.M., where he worked for Memorial General Hospital, now Memorial Medical Center. After 10 years, he retired. In his 70s, Richard helped his wife in her cookie business and was fondly known as the Cookie Man. The Lord God was a large part of Richard's life, and he served Him in many ways: Sunday school teacher, usher, trustee, choir member. Richard eagerly served his Lord in any position he could fill. Richard is survived by his wife of 40 years Joann Nason Markham, daughter; Billiejo and her children Angela, Anthony, and Lila Anne of Albuquerque, sons; Richard N. Markham of Las Cruces and Michael N. Markham Sr. and his son Michael Markham Jr., also of Las Cruces. Other survivors include brothers William R. Markham, Farmingdale, Maine, and Rodney Markham, West Gardiner, Maine, and sisters Cora B. Pushard of Gardiner, Maine, and Ina Mae Dolly of Augusta, Maine. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Norman, Raymond, Earnest, Merle, and Harold Markham, and sisters; Phyllis Rodrick and Marion Cleveland. He leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A Visitation will be held Friday November 4, 2005 from 5-7 PM at Getz Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Saturday November 5, 2005 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church. Following the service cremation will take place followed by a private family burial at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. PDF Printable Version
