Robert Haydn Powell, 71, formerly of Union Bridge, MD, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009 at his residence at 4839 Calle Bella Avenue, Las Cruces, NM after a lengthy illness. He moved to New Mexico with his family in December 2008. Robert was born in Carbondale, PA, the son of Haydn and Betty (Burch) Powell and was baptized in the Presbyterian Church there. He later transferred his membership to the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale. He studied business law in Washington, DC at Benjamin Franklin University and also completed courses in purchasing management at George Washington University. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Robert completed his basic training at Samson Air Force Base in New York and was assigned to the Office of Wing Civil Engineer at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, DC. His career in the electronics industry began after his discharge from the Air Force in 1959. Robert was employed by electronic firms in the Washington/Maryland/Virginia metropolitan area and Pennsylvania, in positions of management and sales. He received numerous awards in recognition of his outstanding performances in outside sales. He was a member of AMVETS and was an avid numismatist. Mr. Powell is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Hunziker Powell, sons Robert Haydn Powell II, Magalia, CA, and Kevin Lee Powell, Las Cruces, granddaughters Bobbi Lee Canter and Kelli Ann Powell, Paradise, CA, and a sister, Sally Masters, of Danville, IL. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 26, at Getz Funeral Home in Las Cruces. Officiating: Rev John Pickett of University Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E.
