Robert Joseph Colston, 84, passed away December 23, 2009. He has been given the greatest gift, to be with Jesus and his wife Dorothy. Bob was born in a "shack by the railroad tracks" on March 14, 1925 in Fredrick, Kansas. His parents moved to Ohio where he was raised until he joined the United States Navy. During World War II he served his country on several ships in which one sunk. He was a survivor and was modest to tell the story. We call him a hero. Bob met Dorothy Eileen Saas in Port Clinton, Ohio, and on January 12, 1948 they married. They then moved back to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1958-59 and then moved back in 1963. He was involved in the early space programs with NASA and then transferred to White Sands Missile Range where he worked as a Radar Technician until his retirement in 1982. During these years, he was an avid golfer playing in Las Cruces, WSMR, and occasionally in Anthony, New Mexico. He won numerous handicap tournaments and even won an Ace of Aces at the Las Cruces Country Club. His best score ever was a 62, shot at New Mexico State University. Golf, playing his guitar and singing were his favorite hobbies. His friends were special to him and his family was his world. He was a loving brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Bob was preceded by his wife, Dorothy, brothers Herm and Dean Colston, sister Imagay, and great-granddaughter Cassidy Renea. Bob is survived by his sister, Shirley Millinger of Port Clinton, Ohio, his brother Cal Colston of Port Clinton, Ohio, his daughters, Jo Ray and husband Bill Ray of Las Cruces, NM, Nancy Susan Simpson of Chandler, Arizona, Linda Lou (Penny) Wyant and husband Thomas Wyant of Los Alamos, NM and son, Robert Joseph Colston Jr. and wife Pamela Colston of Las Cruces, NM. His grandchildren, Denise Dawn Woodard and husband, Brandon, Wayne Roger Marois, Bryan L. N. Simpson, Michelle Renee Marin and husband Angel, Melissa Sue Upchurch and husband Alex, Melinda Anne Simpson, Richard Thomas Wyant, Laura Jean Winams and husband Todd, Regina Ann Mossburg, Janu Robin Campbell and husband Matthew, Crystal Dawn Kropf and husband Ryan, his 21 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He loved and was loved by many and we will miss him. Memorial Services to celebrate his life will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009 at First Baptist Church where he was a member. Rev. Dr. Maurice Hollingsworth will be officiating with burial to follow at Masonic Cemetery. PDF Printable Version
