Robert J Durio was born in El Paso, Texas, on January 2, 1933 to Mr. and Mrs. David Durio. At the age of 5, Robert was sent to the New Mexico School for the Deaf (NMSD) in Santa Fe, NM. He remained there through high school and graduated in 1953. Robert then went to Gallaudet University in Washington D.C and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Business Administration. Robert was employed in 1961 by the Physical Science Laboratory at New Mexico State University as a computer programmer for 32 years. Robert retired in 1992. During his retirement, he traveled to Europe and Scandinavian countries three times. Robert was an active member in the Deaf Community. Robert served as the President of the New Mexico Association of the Deaf (NMAD) from 1975 to 1977. He also served as the president of the Las Cruces Chapter of NMAD for 6 years. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, David and Florence Durio, his brother, Dr. William Durio, his nephew, Dr. David Durio, and his beloved aunt, Evangeline Durio. Robert is survived by his sister-in-law, Nola Durio of Las Cruces, NM, his nephew, Mark Durio of Canutillo, TX, his great-niece, Alison Durio of Amarillo, TX, his nieces, Lauren Stanfield from Sugarland, TX, , and Carolyn Durio from Dallas, TX, his great-nephew, William Durio from Canutillo, TX, his favorite cousins, Tim Barry of Lafayette, LA and David Tulloch of Albuquerque, NM. Robert also has a great- great niece and nephew, Caydon Sanders from Amarillo, TX and Laila Stanfield from Sugarland, TX. Visitation will be held at Getz Funeral Home from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 with a Rosary to follow at 7 P.M. Visitation will resume at 9 A.M., Thursday, October 5, 2017 at St. Genevieve Catholic Church, 100 South Espina in Las Cruces with a Funeral Mass to be held at 10 A.M. The Rite of Christian Burial and interment will follow at the Masonic Cemetery, 760 South Compress Road, Las Cruces. The family and friends of Mr. Durio respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, you consider a donation to the New Mexico School for the Deaf, Rabbi Helman Experiential Programs Endowment.
