Robert Leo Hertel, (Bob) was 84 years old, soon to be 85 in April. He passed away on January 31st, 2024 at Mesilla Valley Hospice following a short illness. Bob was born on April 12th, 1939 in Waukegan, Illinois, to Susan and Leo Hertel. He was the youngest of three siblings, Don, Earl and Howie. He was educated in Catholic schools in Waukegan. Bob was enlisted in the Army in 1963-1965 and in the Reserves for many years after that. For the majority of his tenure he was stationed in Germany. Following active duty, he married Betty Hogan from Clinton Tennessee in 1966 and they were married until her death in 2007. They had one son, Michael Hertel who was born in Waukegan Illinois in 1967.

Bob worked for civil service for almost forty years. The majority of his employment was at White Sands Missile Range as a Print Operator.

He is survived by his nieces: Jane, Romy, and Julie, all of California, Deborah and her partner Amy from Texas, Resa and Angie and her husband Dennis of Tennessee. Nephews: Mike of California, Larry, and Robert of Tennessee. Also, survived by his special companion Patricia Buck, her daughter Aliyah, husband Sawyer, their son Lucas and Pat’s granddaughter, Emma.

Bob is preceded in death by his Mother, Susan, Father, Leo, brothers, Don, Earl, and Howie. His wife,

Betty and son, Michael.

Services with be held on Thursday February 8th at 10:0AM0 at Getz Funeral Home, at 1410 E. Bowman Avenue, Las Cruces, New Mexico 88011. Interment will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso Texas on Monday February 12th at 10:00AM.
