Ruth Gluck, age 96 died on Thursday, December 30, 2004. She was the wife of Bernard Gluck, a prominent Las Cruces merchant who passed away in 1992. Ruth was born October 27, 1908 in Odessa, Russia. When she was a year old, she came to the United States and El Paso, Texas with her parents, Benjamin and Elsie Galatzan and her older sisters, Sarah (Nasits) and Lena (Behrman). Her brothers, Judge Morris Galatzan and Dr. Joe Galatzan were born in El Paso. Ruth graduated from El Paso High School. She taught first grade at Aoy School in El Paso, TX. Even in her later years Ruth reminisced about the children she taught and loved. She married Bernard Gluck in 1931 and moved to Las Cruces. Daughter Ann Gluck Hansen was born in 1939. Ruth and her husband opened a clothing store, The Budget Shop, and later ran an infants' and childrens' shop, The Stork Center, until ill health forced Bernard's retirement. Like her husband, Ruth was active in the Las Cruces community. She was Worthy Matron of Eastern Star in 1941 and remained a lifetime member of that organization. During World War II she contributed to various projects organized by the American Red Cross. She was a founding member of the Las Cruces Chapter of Hadassah, Jewish Womens' Service organization. She and Bernard Gluck were among the founding member of Temple Beth El, where Ruth was active in Sisterhood. Prior to the establishment of the Jewish synagogue in Las Cruces, the Glucks were members of Congregation Bnai Zion in El Paso. As her daughter Ann grew up, Ruth was active in Girl Scouts and Band Parents at Las Cruces High School. Ruth is survived by her daughter Ann Hansen, grandchildren; JC Hansen, Diana Hansen Swope and her husband Dave, and great grandchildren; Carl, Brandon, and Savannah Swope, as well as many nieces and nephews who remember her warmth and kindness to all.
