S.D. "Sam" Higgins, 90, died on April 12. He was in the auto service business in El Paso for 32 years, first as a partner in Pete & Sam's Conoco Service from 1946 until 1968 and then as owner of Sam Higgins' Texaco until 1977 when he retired. Both businesses were in the 2500 block of North Mesa Ave. He was born in Five Points, AL, but grew up near Reed, Oklahoma. He came to El Paso in 1936 when he joined the Army, and settled here after WWII. He lived here until 2001 when he moved to Las Cruces. He served as Staff Sergeant in the US Army 1st Calvary, 82 Field Artillery, and after WWII began moved to the 361st Infantry, 91st Division, Headquarters Company with which he served in Italy as Warrant Officer, JG. Three children; Durward Higgins of Chattanooga, TN and daughters Phoebe Higgins of Albuquerque, and Sharon Elaine Welch of Las Cruces survive him. Also seven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, a sister Loette Higgins Buckner of Alton, IL and a brother A.C. Davis of Willow, OK. A graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Rev. Doug Coyle of Grace Presbyterian Church will officiate.
