We celebrate the life of Sadie Chew Parriott who passed away February 10, 2014 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Sadie was born to Newton Chew and Mabel Elliott Chew, on January 9, 1910 in Alva, Oklahoma, the sixth of nine children. Following graduation from Northwestern Oklahoma Teachers College in Alva, OK in 1932, Sadie taught high school math, English and PE in Alva. While spending two summers in Colorado with her sister, Sadie met Jennings A. Parriott. They married in 1934 and resided in Denver, Colorado. Both their children were born while living in Denver. Their first child, a daughter Sharon, was born in 1940, and then a son, Ronald, was born in 1942. In 1947, the family moved to Rocky Ford, Colorado and Sadie resumed teaching in the elementary grades after thirteen years. In 1954, the family moved again, this time to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where Sadie remained the rest of her life. Sadie retired in 1975, having taught for a total of 32 years, 20 of those years teaching fifth grade at Alameda Elementary. Sadie was preceded in death by her husband in 1981, her father in 1973, her mother in 1963 and by her sisters, brothers-in-law, brothers, and sisters-in-law Lucille France (John), Kenneth C. Sadie participated in family camping trips, sewed her daughter's clothes, helped her son with his paper route, canned food, all while making it possible for her students to "love" math. Sadie made it possible for her children to attend college and saw her grandchildren obtain degrees also. In retirement, Sadie took cruises to Alaska and Hawaii, as well as tours to Canada and the East Coast. She was a member of the Senior Dance Club and held season tickets to see the "Aggies" play until she was 97. Sadie's favorite hobby was reading and she kept a journal listing all the books she read and reread by author and by title that numbered in the hundreds. She began each day feeding her birds that seemed to wait outside her door. Sadie was one of a kind and will never be forgotten by her friends, students, and most of all, her family.
