Saramae (Sally) Baker Root passed away in Las Cruces on November 24, 2015 at the age of 90. Sally was born January 12, 1925 in Mansfield, Louisiana. The second child of Clyde and Eunice Baker, the family soon moved back to New Mexico where she lived the rest of her life. After graduating from Las Cruces High School in 1943, she was a nurse cadet in Chicago, but came home after the war. She met Ted Root in Sunday school at St. Paul's Methodist Church, and they were married in 1946. Ted and Sally had three children, Ron, Carol, and Gary, and during their first ten years, lived in several communities around the state where Ted taught school. In 1959 they moved the family to Las Cruces. Sally returned to school and began teaching in 1962 and taught third and fourth grades at University Hills Elementary School for many years before returning. Ted and Sally were active members of University United Methodist Church, Sally was also active in PEO. After retirement Sally joined Ted in gardening and traveling around the country to visit family. They moved to Good Samaritan Las Cruces community in 2003. Sally is survived by her children Ron in Texas, Carol in Seattle, and Gary in New Zealand, and by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by her older brother, Mack in Albuquerque, and many nieces, and nephews around the world. She was preceded in death by Ted in 2004, and by her parents, two sisters and five brothers. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Getz Funeral Home. PDF Printable Version
