On the afternoon of July 5th, 2013, Shelby Heiden passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces after battling cancer for many years. She was 49 years old. Shelby was born in Albuquerque on July 3rd, 1964 to Jack and Anne Sylvester. She was their third daughter and fourth child. She was brought home to Grants, NM where she grew up, surrounded by a loving family and friends. Shelby attended Milan Elementary, St. Theresa's Catholic School and then Grants High School. Upon graduation, Shelby left home to attend Texas Tech University. After two years she moved to Las Cruces to eventually finish her education. During this time she met her husband to be, Mark. They had their son, Adam, and were married on March 12th, 1993. Shelby graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from NMSU in May 1994 and shortly after began her career with Tresco Inc. Shelby's biggest enjoyment in life was her family. Whether it was getting together for holidays, birthdays, weddings, football games, family vacations or shopping trips with her sisters and nieces, she was always happiest when she was surrounded by those she loved and who loved her. She was just as content to sit at home and watch a good movie or sit on the patio in the evening, look at the stars and listen to her favorite music. If she was with family it was always time well spent. With everything Shelby had to deal with in her life, she was always more concerned about how you were doing or feeling, not about herself. She is by far the strongest and most selfless person we have known. Shelby is survived by her husband Mark and son Adam, her mother Anne Sylvester, sister Debbie and husband Jimmy Michael, all of Las Cruces; sister Jackie and husband Paul Stahlecker of Durango Co.; brother Dennis Sylvester of Grants NM; her in-laws Bonnie and Elden Heiden of Las Cruces; brother in-law Steve Heiden and wife Linda of Rowlette TX; brother in-law Greg Heiden of Benedict NE and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Sylvester. A memorial service will be held at Getz funeral chapel on Friday, July 26th at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers we ask that you make a contribution on line to Cowboys for Cancer in Shelby's name.
