Shirley Jean Sallach was born August 10, 1932 to Ernest and Amelia Rehfeld in Lynwood, CA, the youngest of six daughters. She met her future husband, Robert (Bob) Sallach, in high school, and married him on June 19, 1952. She was busy raising four children while Bob advanced his career and they ended up in Albuquerque, NM. Shirley attended the University of New Mexico where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Recreation and her Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling. After working for the YMCA and Camp Fire Girls, she started Starfire Day Camp. After growing the business for several years, Shirley and Bob established a permanent spot outside of Albuquerque for the camp. The activities offered included horseback riding, arts and crafts, swimming, camping skills, volleyball, a ropes course, and archery among others. After many successful years, Shirley and Bob retired and closed the camp. They spent winters in Las Cruces, NM and summers at the former camp for many years, enjoying volunteering and hobbies. Shirley enjoyed her tin work and stained glass and both enjoyed square dancing. Shirley is survived by her husband, kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association or your favorite square dance club would be appreciated.
