Steven Joseph Rhinehart, 61, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. Steve, originally from Albuquerque, NM, is survived by his wife, Debbie of Las Cruces, NM; his son, William of Austin, TX; and his daughter, Stephanie and her husband Tobias Hausotter of Berlin, Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenna and William Rhinehart, and his brother, Ron Rhinehart. Steve moved to Las Cruces to attend NMSU, eventually earning two degrees including a Master's degree in Educational Specialties. It was at NMSU that he met Debbie. The couple settled in Las Cruces and raised their children there. Steve taught in the Las Cruces Public Schools system for 25 years with a focus on Reading and retired in 2005. After his retirement, he continued to give back to his community by volunteering up to 20 hours a week as member of Memorial Medical Center's Auxiliary. He also served on the Auxiliary Board and Scholarship Committee, managing the scholarship awarding process for several years. He enjoyed giving back to the Las Cruces community. Steve was an accomplished writer and artist. He enjoyed competing with the neighbors in keeping his lawn green and beautiful. He was the chief dog walker, walking the family dog every morning and night. He enjoyed cooking and keeping up with current events, investigating topics that interested him online. His volunteer work sparked an interest in health care, and he enjoyed doing further research on topics he discussed with the doctors and nurses he encountered at the hospital. Steve also enjoyed drawing and painting, creating many works of art for the family home and the annual Christmas greeting card. He loved music and his tastes ranged from jazz to classic rock
