We lost our beloved mother and grandmother, Sylvia Carole Evans, unexpectedly, Sept. 18, 2008. A life-long resident of Las Cruces and southern New Mexico, she was born Feb. 13, 1941, in Charlotte N.C. Sylvia was preceded in death by her father, William Layton Untz in 1979, and her mother Margaret Lucille Doughty, in 2006. Ms. Evans moved to Alamogordo, N. M. in 1951, as her parents had come West seeking remedy for her father's acute asthma. She was recently retired from the college of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business at New Mexico State University where she was the Department's office manager. Upon retirement she had been tasked with researching and documenting the history of the college at the behest of the dean. She was loved and admired greatly and is deeply missed by many, including her colleagues at the university and several life-long friends that she cherished. A former executive legal secretary, she worked several diverse jobs over the years to support her family including several years as a union millwright helping to build the Palo Verde Nuclear generating station near Phoenix, Ariz. She was a vivacious woman with an incredibly stout constitution mixed with a potent intellect. She was dearly loved by her children, Brenda McKiddy, and Zane Evans, both of Golden, Colo. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Rhiannon, Austin, Ian, Audrey and Aden, whom she dearly loved and adored spending time with. New Mexico, the wide-open state she loved so much, is emptier. Please join family and friends for a potluck gathering at the Elk's Club immediately following the memorial service to be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Getz Funeral Home in Las Cruces. Please make donations in lieu of flowers to the La Casa Women's shelter or St. Luke's Health Care Clinic. These were two causes she felt strongly about and supported. PDF Printable Version
