Tommy Gann Stokes, 74 of Las Cruces, NM went home to be with the Lord on December 26, 2005 at La Posada - Mesilla Valley Hospice. He was born June 12, 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Tom attended Junior High and High School in New Mexico and Texas moving to New Mexico in 1949. Tom Stokes graduated High School in 1950 from Espanola, New Mexico. That fall his college career was cut short because of the Korean Conflict, spending two years on Guam. After returning state side he was assigned Communication Flag Ship USS Estes. During his military service in the Navy, Tom witnessed the first Hydrogen Bomb Test. Upon finishing military service in December 1954, Tom and his mother Ruth Stokes-Morris moved to Denver Colorado. Tom graduated from Denver University with a degree in Education and taught in the Denver Public Schools for almost thirty years. Upon retirement in 1992, Tom along with Bob and Ruth Morris moved to Las Cruces, NM. For several months he taught FYI Kids at Risk in Southern, New Mexico. Tom was a man of culture, who enjoyed classical music, reading and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Las Cruces, NM. Tommy is survived by Step-mother, Mildred Stokes of Jacksonville, Texas; Step-father Bob Morris of Las Cruces, NM; adopted brother Pastor D. Ray Taylor and his wife Betty of Stratton, Colorado; cousins, Muriel Bundrick, Dollie Goodling, Norman McDuffie, John Sam McDuffie, Cora Lee Phillips, and several second cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Stokes-Morris. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Getz Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor D. Ray Taylor, Richard King, and Mike Edwards. At his request cremation has taken place and his ashes will be scattered at Grand Lake in Granby, Colorado. PDF Printable Version
