Virginia Redmond Young, 82, passed away on Jan. 22, 2015 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was born on May 24, 1932 in Modesto, California to Donald and Margaret Redmond. She grew up in the Modesto area, eventually moving to work in the insurance industry in San Francisco and meeting her future husband there. She married Robert Young in Oakdale, California on September 21, 1952. During her husband's career in the United States Air Force and with the Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) they lived in Okinawa, Japan, as well as in Seattle, Wichita Falls, Detroit, and locations in Maryland before retiring to Las Cruces. She was a Girl Scout leader, and her interests included needlepoint, square dancing, bowling, and gardening. An exceptional homemaker, she was known for the stunning quilts she made for her family and for local charitable organizations. Above all, her life was characterized by unselfish devotion to her family. She is survived by her husband and the children they lovingly raised: Wesley (Lisa) Young of Socorro, New Mexico, Kathleen (Robert) Hunt of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Janet Smith of Annapolis, Maryland, and Patricia (John) McCaffrey of Las Cruces. She is also survived by granddaughters Sarah, Rachel, Gail, and Tessa Hunt, Maelisa (Carlos) Hall, and Nina (Matt) Bailey as well as grandsons Karl and Joseph Young, David (Kassandra), Adam, Paul, Bram, and Jacob Hunt, Michael Smith, and Corey (Julie) McCaffrey. She also leaves great-granddaughters Lucia Hunt, Lily Smith, and Olivia and Fiona Bailey, and great-grandsons Daniel Hunt, Miles McCaffrey, and James Bailey. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Margaret. She was a member of Mission Lutheran Church. A service in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 7th at 11 AM at Mission Lutheran Church and School at 2752 Roadrunner Parkway in Las Cruces. The memorial service will be officiated by Rev. Robert Carabotta, and arrangements made with Getz Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Mission Lutheran Church School.
