Verna Ruth Petty Gerk was born April 21, 1937 in Alamogordo, NM. During her early years she lived at the logging camp in Marcia located in the Sacramento Mountains, the family moved to Carrizozo when Verna Ruth was in the second grade. After graduating from Carrizozo High School she attended College at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces that is where Verna met Fred who was to be her husband for the next 48 years. They lived in Las Cruces where Verna made the family home, raising three children and always being there for the family. In later years there was a second place at Caballo Lake, which she loving referred to as her "Castle on the Hill". Verna loved the mountains, the beautiful New Mexico skies and all the rest of nature's beauty. Family events were something that she always made extra special. Verna was preceded in death by Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Gerk Sr., her parents Mr., and Mrs. Vernon Petty and her husband Fred. She is survived by her son Casey of Las Cruces and son Stacy and wife Jeanette of Bloomfield, NM. She is also survived by her daughter Valerie Hinkle and husband Jeff of Sioux Falls, SD. Verna Ruth has two brothers Joe Petty and wife Jan of Omaha, NE and Mike Petty of Farmington, NM. Nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, uncles, and numerous cousins also fondly remember Verna Ruth. Verna loved flowers but always said they were for the living.
