On the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, Virginia Dixon Barron passed away peacefully at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice. Born to Kenneth R. and Zelma Mendenhall Dixon on Mar. 1, 1924, in Payson, Utah, Virginia was the fourth of seven children. She attended Payson schools and attended Utah State University where she majored in physical education. Later, she earned her M.A. degree in Education from Arizona State University. Virginia was a master teacher and truly loved her career. She retired after thirty-five years of teaching a combination of elementary, junior high and high school levels. Since her college years, Virginia has been known as "Dixie." In addition to coaching sports, Dixie loved teaching dance. During the time that she taught in Las Cruces, NM, she organized a 'pom squad'----the first ever in Las Cruces Public Schools---at the former Lynn Junior High School. Prior to teaching at Lynn Jr. High, Mrs. Barron taught at the former Lucero, Washington, and Grand View elementary schools. She also taught at Valley View elementary. She will be deeply missed by all of her family, especially her grandchildren. Their "Grandma Dixie" always had a new card game to teach them when she visited. "Aunt Virginia" will also be missed by many nieces and nephews and their families who have been dear to her heart and who were blessed with her bright smile and infectious sense of play and fun at the many family reunions over the years. Dixie shared a lot of jokes, laughter, and fun with her friends! She loved to wear hats and passed that passion on to her friends. Anyone attending the memorial service is invited to wear their favorite hat to the service. She is survived by her son Randy Barron and wife Kay of Mineral Pt., WI, Two daughters; Valli Barron of Las Cruces, NM and Kerri and husband John Forshey of Roswell, NM, son-in-law Bruce Harris of Roswell. She is also survived by grandchildren: Brett (Trudy) Nevarez, Sommer Nevarez, Grant Wood, Shawn (Carey) Wood, Pam (Shawn) Johnsrud, Sara (Jason) Starr, Stephanie Harris, and Deanne Harris. Dixie is also survived by great-grandchildren, Bryce E. and Brooklyn S. Johnsrud, Whitley K Starr, Jace, Ashton, and Finlee Wood, Allie, Devin, and Sarah Wood. She was preceded in death by her daughter Lori Barron Harris, grandchildren Justin Nevarez, Lauren Hope Harris, great-granddaughter, Madalyn Wood. Memorial Services to celebrate her life will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, Nov. 26, 2007 at Getz Funeral Home with Rev.Gorton Smith of St. Paul's United Methodist Church officiating.
