Virginia Hankins (Thompson) Weeks went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, surrounded by her family. She was born on March 14, 1922 to Leonard and Martha Lou Elma Thompson outside Sulligent, AL. Orphaned at age 6, she lived with various relatives. She was educated at Lamar County High School, Florence State Teachers College (Univ. of N. Alabama) and WMU Training School (Southern Baptist Theological Seminary). After teaching school in Lamar County, she worked at the Italian Baptist Center in Ensley,AL . After a long courtship, in 1950 she married the love of her life, Donald Weeks. Together they answered the call to ministry, living in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana during college and seminary training. In 1957, they were appointed by the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to Pueblo, CO, where they started Central Baptist Church. In 1964 they moved to Gary, IN, to establish the Gary Baptist Center. After Don's retirement in 1979, they returned to Sulligent, AL until their move to Las Cruces in 2002 for Don's health and to be near family. Virginia was a wonderful homemaker, helpmate, mother and teacher. She touched countless lives with her love, even until her death. Her ministry was often through creative Bible teaching and English instruction for internationals, always interacting in genuine love. She continued teaching a study at Mira Vista Senior apartments until just before her passing. Preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Rev. Donald Weeks, and her siblings, Lucille Warren, Ruth Smith, Lester Thompson and Troy Thompson, she is survived by her children, Douglas (Rosanne), and Janet (Tom) Hicks, by grandchildren Ryan (Ariel), and Bethany Weeks and Rebekah and Sarah Hicks, and by her sister-in-law, Sara Thompson Tuck, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Friday January 6, 2012 at the Norwood Funeral Home in Shiloh, Alabama. Funeral services will be 11 am Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Sulligent, AL. A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Las Cruces.
