Walter R. Nelson, 76, passed away on May 28, 2015. Walter was born in Dexter, NM 3 miles North on Pecos River on November 12, 1938 to parents Cecil and Gladys Nelson. Walter R. Nelson, 76, passed away on May 28, 2015. Walter was born in Dexter, NM 3 miles North on Pecos River on November 12, 1938 to parents Cecil and Gladys Nelson. He grew up in Dexter, NM with his brother Joe Allen Nelson. The boys loved their parents and enjoyed growing up working the farms in Lovington, NM and Hagerman, NM. Walter graduated from Dexter High School in 1957 of a graduating class of 12 people. His favorite quote in his senior yearbook was "If good boys die young, I will be a ripe old age." Walter graduated from New Mexico State University in 1963 with a Bachelor's of Science in Horticulture. Walter was married to Peggy Ann Lewis On May 2, 1964 at St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church in Albuquerque, NM. Walter and Peggy recently celebrated 51 years of marriage. Walter's calling in life was farming. He worked as agricultural consultant and loved farming on his pecan orchard. Walter prided himself in his extremely beautiful vegetable gardens over years. Walter was an amazing father to his three daughters: Stacey, Brenda and Karen. Walter taught his daughters many things in life including how to drive, drag tree limbs on the farm and identify bugs and weeds. Walter always enjoyed a good joke, jalapenos, good hot Mexican food, horse races and a good cold Coors Light on a hot Las Cruces day.
