William "Gilbert" Valencia passed away late February at his home in Mesilla Park, NM. His parents were Willie T. Valencia and Marie Chavez Valencia. Gilbert attended Las Cruces High School. Gilbert served in the US Army where he served his country honorably during the Vietnam era and the Cuban Crisis. He completed about 20 years of sobriety, worked for Valencia Electric, White Sands Missile Range and the Salvation Army. His task was that of electrician, maintenance, handyman and his favorite as a holiday bell ringer. He is survived by his uncle Steve (Ester) Valencia of Arrey, NM; brother Robert Valencia of Las Cruces; sister Elizabeth (Joe) Palace of Kansas City, MO; nieces and nephews Angela (Jon, daughter Demesia) James of Albuquerque, NM, Teresa (sons Angelo, Marcos and Lucas) Palace of Kansas City, MO, Krystal (Branden) Palace-McClintock of Camp Pendelton, CA, Samuel, Celso, Victoria and Veronica of Fairacres, NM. Gilbert was preceded in death by both parents, brother Alvin (Houston) and Richard (Mary) of Las Cruces. A visitation will be held from 12 Noon to 2:00 pm on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Getz Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 2:30 pm with his brother-in-law Joe Palace officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Devil Dogs Marine League of Las Cruces. PDF Printable Version
