William R. Squires, Jr. passed away in Las Cruces, NM on September 18, 2013. He was born September 10, 1924 in Dallas, Texas, the son of William R. Squires and Florence Peterman. He came to El Paso at an early age, attending Crockett and El Paso High Schools. He had a storied athletic career at El Paso High, leading the Tigers (as quarterback) to its most successful football season ever in 1940 (which he chronicled for the El Paso County Historical Society in its fall, 2001 edition of "Password" magazine). He was selected Honorable Mention All-State and played in the Oil Bowl All-Star Game. He then attended Southern Methodist University on a football scholarship, playing in SMU's golden age of Doak Walker. After graduation from SMU and service in the US Navy, Bill returned to El Paso to begin work with the El Paso National Bank. He became a Senior Vice President in charge of the Trust and Marketing Departments. In 1970, he was elected chairman of the Trust Division of the Texas Bankers Association. He left El Paso National Bank to become a founder and President of Continental National Bank, a new institution in Downtown El Paso. After leaving Continental National Bank, he ran for the office of Alderman in El Paso. Though losing this race, it was one of his proudest moments, as he was a firm believer that every citizen of this great country should offer themselves for some public office. In El Paso, he was quite active in civic affairs
