Winfred Robert King was born January 12, 1938, to Elmer G. King and Ruth Welch King in Canutillo, TX and passed away peacefully on April 21, 2016, in Las Cruces, NM. Winfred Robert King was born January 12, 1938, to Elmer G. King and Ruth Welch King in Canutillo, TX and passed away peacefully on April 21, 2016, in Las Cruces, NM. After graduating high school, Winfred joined the United States Navy. He proudly served his country on both the USS Saint Paul and the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, and in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was honorably discharged from military service on January 12, 1959, but his devotion to service continued when Winfred returned to civilian life. He served at various times as Assistant Chief of Police for both New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM and the City of Eloy, AZ; worked for the AZ Department of Corrections and performed drug and alcohol counseling for the Salvation Army in Phoenix, AZ; and Las Cruces and Albuquerque, NM. He was also a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). In addition to being a weightlifting champion, Winfred loved to cook and bake and expressed his natural creativity by producing beautiful ceramic pieces. Winfred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Effie King. He is survived by his son Robert King, daughter Lorraine Mason, grandson Wade Mason, and 2 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Sherrie Edgerly and 2 children. A memorial service was held at Peace Lutheran Church in Las Cruces, NM with interment at Fort Bayard National Cemetery, Fort Bayard, NM PDF Printable Version
